The Main House

The main house was built in about 1995, the first of three stages by a local architect trained in Mexico City, in Santa Maria del Tule — El Tule for short — around thirty minutes from the Oaxaca city center by car and an hour by public transit. It sits on a single floor, with three bedrooms and a bathroom at the back. A wood and stained glass front door opens onto one large room beneath high sloping ceilings, holding the living room, dining room and kitchen. A porch runs along the front, reached by stairs up from a large front patio of cobblestone and hexagonal red brick with two gardens. A rooftop terrace gives access to the water tank. Off the back, a small sheltered service area takes the laundry.

The Apartment Building

The apartment building behind the house followed around 2000, two floors with one unit on each. The ground floor apartment is a single large room with a sink and an area prepared for kitchen appliances, a full bathroom, and windows along one entire wall facing the patio. Above it, the second floor apartment is divided by a drywall partition, sitting under high ceilings with exposed wooden beams. A balcony runs the length of the front, and a half bath could take a shower. Both open onto the second patio, which holds three gardens, three trees and a barbecue area with a countertop. A dry toilet is inconspicuously located in the corner of the patio beside covered parking for one car. A separate entrance leads out from here to a quiet unpaved street lined with trees.

The Storefront

The storefront was added last, around 2010, fronting the main highway through Tule about a hundred meters east of the town's eastern entrance arch. It suits an office, a shop or light food service, and has head-in parking for four cars. It's directly along the main highway heading out of the tourist zone of El Tule with the Tule Tree.
